Q: Why is robotics important for my child?

A: Robotics combines various fields of engineering including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science. Robotics is ideal for young students because it exposes them to hands-on applications of math, science, and engineering concepts. In addition, robotics motivates budding scientists and engineers to understand how things work and encourages them to use their imagination to create new technologies and improve old technologies.

 Q: What are LEGO® Mindstorms™?

A: In the past, robotics was limited to a select group of individuals who had extensive knowledge of mechanics, electronics, and computer programming. Since then, more “user-friendly” robotics kits such as LEGO® Mindstorms™ (developed by MIT researchers) have evolved to make robotics accessible to novices as well. Unlike other robotics kits, LEGO® Mindstorms™ focuses on mechanics and computer programming using a graphical programming language. Computer programming is extremely powerful because it allows young students to create autonomous robots that can sense, think, and act on their own without human intervention (unlike remote-controlled robots).

Q: How does your camp differ from other robotics camps?

A: Our camp provides campers with access to the robotics kits to create their own robots and also with 30 hours of in-depth quality instruction to teach them how to utilize the kits. In essence, we provide the campers with strategies to create robots that would otherwise take hours of frustration to learn.

In addition, our formal engineering background has allowed us to design a curriculum that exposes campers to concepts that are usually taught at the high school and university levels. However, since the campers are young, those concepts are simplified and presented in an engaging manner. Various multimedia presentations, interactive demonstrations, hands-on projects, team activities, and mini-competitions will be used to provide fun, yet highly educational instruction.

* Computer programming is easier to learn because it uses a graphical-based computer programming language (i.e. RoboLab™)
** Computer programming is more difficult to learn because it uses a text-based computer programming language (i.e., PBASIC™, C)

Q: What will my child gain from your camp?

A: Our main goal is to provide campers with a "taste" of engineering and excite them about creating future technology. We will accomplish this goal by showing campers how to create their own autonomous robots and inventions. In the process of learning about robotics, your child will develop numerous skills including problem solving, logical reasoning, creativity, communication, team management, and self-confidence. These skills are highly-desirable for children who will succeed in the future. After having learned how to use the LEGO® Mindstorms™ Kit and RoboLab™, campers can participate in the FIRST LEGO League competitions at the local, state, and national levels.

Q: Can you send me a flyer and registration form?

A: You can obtain a 2-page flyer with registration form by either downloading it (RoboticsFlyer.pdf) or you can call RHP Summer Programs at (310) 791-1101 x336 to request that it be mailed directly to you.
